The blackthorn is a spiny, deciduous shrub, growing 1-5m tall. The bark is dark grey to blackish, slightly grooved.
The leaves are alternate, 2-5×1-2cm long, obovate to oblanceolate, or elliptical, with margins finely toothed, green in colour and hairless above, usually hairy on the veins underneath.
The flowers are white, 1-1.7cm wide, usually solitary, appearing before leaves, numerous, on about 0.5cm long pedicels.
