Ruscus aculeatus, known as butcher's-broom, is a rhizomatous evergreen subshrubs that reaches up to 75 cm.
The plant has flat shoots known as cladodes that give the appearance of stiff, spine-tipped leaves.
Small greenish flowers are borne singly in the centre of the cladodes. The female or hermaphrodite plants produce glossy red berries.
