Sage is a perennial evergreen subshrub with woody stems and numerous side branches.
The aromatic leaves are simple, oblong and narrow and become narrower in the direction of the stem where they are sometimes auriculated.
The leaf edge is delicately toothed. The leaves are greenish to silver grey.
The flowers are blue, variegated with white and purple, and are disposed on long terminal spikes.
